Archetype Nolly X runs on any Mac from macOS 10.13 onward, with native Apple Silicon support across the whole signal chain. The 1.0.2 update also brought the amp output knobs in line with Quad Cortex behaviour, so levels translate naturally between the two.

Four amps, one signal path

The core is a digital version of Nolly Getgood’s custom-modified amplifiers, split into four channels: Clean, Crunch, Rhythm, and Lead. The range moves from glassy headroom through to tight, percussive high-gain that sits in a dense mix without crowding the low mids. Before the amp section you get two input boosts, a compressor, and a delay — enough to shape the transient and push the front end before a single note hits the cabinet. After the amp, a built-in equalizer and a cabinet loader that accepts custom IR files let you dial in the exact speaker response the track needs. The Doubler adds stereo width that feels closer to a double-tracked performance than a static spread, and the room effects place the whole rig in a believable space rather than leaving it dry and isolated.

Shaping a part’s presence without touching volume

What makes the plugin work across a session is how the controls change the way a part reads against everything else. A slight shift in the output EQ can pull a riff forward without raising its level, and backing off the room blend on a clean arpeggio tightens it up for a verse. Because the output stage now matches the taper on the Quad Cortex devices, recalling a setting you dialled in elsewhere keeps the same apparent loudness. It loads as a VST, AU, or AAX plugin, and there is a standalone mode for practice or tone testing without opening a DAW.

What 1.0.2 quietly changed in daily use

The October 2024 update looked small on paper, but it tidied up two friction points that had been there since launch. The output knob range now mirrors the taper on Neural DSP's Quad Cortex hardware, so when you move a preset from the plugin to the floor unit — or the other way around — the level lands where you expect it instead of needing a compensatory nudge. On a session where you are switching between tracking at the desk and rehearsing with a live rig, that consistency saves a few seconds every time. The other fix is cosmetic but welcome: the standalone app icon no longer stretches or sits at the wrong size on either macOS or Windows, which matters more than it should when you are scanning a dock full of audio tools.

Apple Silicon native support across every format

Does it work on an Apple Silicon Mac without Rosetta? Yes. The plugin runs natively on ARM, including the standalone app and every plug-in format it ships with — VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX. There is no translation layer between the amp models and the processor.

Can I load my own cabinet impulses? The cabinet section accepts custom IR files, so you are not locked to the built-in speaker options. Drop in a favourite blend from another library and it slots into the signal chain just after the power amp.

Will the Transpose feature handle a full step down without artefacts? It tracks well enough for writing and practice. For a finished take, most players still prefer to actually tune the instrument, but as a scratch-track tool or a way to try a lower key before committing, it does the job with minimal latency and no obvious warbling on single-note lines.

What is different about the Nolly version compared to other Archetype suites? The amp voicings lean toward the mid-forward, percussive sound Nolly Getgood is known for — tight low end, a fast pick attack, and enough clarity in the high-mids that a heavily saturated rhythm part still reads the note separation. The Doubler and the pre-amp delay section are also specific to this suite and push it slightly beyond a straightforward amp sim into a tone-design tool for layered metal and prog productions.

Questions from the booth

Yes, the built-in cabinet loader supports custom IR files, so you can replace the stock cabinets with your own captures.

It does. Archetype Nolly X includes native Apple Silicon support and also runs on Intel Macs from macOS 10.13 onward.

The Doubler adds stereo widening that mimics a double-tracked guitar performance, giving the sound more width than a simple pan or spread effect.
